MANCHESTER UNITED are in pole position to land Benfica whizkid Renato Sanches — and Sir Alex Ferguson has thrown his weight behind a move for the midfielder.
Sanches, 18, only broke into the Portuguese champions side last November but has quickly established himself as a major talent.
And the young star has attracted the attention of Europe’s elite, with United,Manchester City, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich all interested in his services.
But according to the Guardian, Sir Alex Ferguson has backed a move for the teenage sensation and United are very much in the driving seat.
The club are understood to have hav scouted Sances on several occasions and the proposed transfer may be made smoother by the good relationship between Old Trafford chiefs and the players agent Jorge Mendes.
After a dismal season which has divided the fanbase and heaped pressure on boss Louis van Gaal, United are looking to freshun up their side with an influx of fresh talent.
And with Jose Mourinho waiting in the wings to take over at Old Trafford, Sanches is high up the list of potential targets.
United’s ageing midfield lacks a youthful exuberance in the middle to compliment the emergence of academy stars Marcus Rashford and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick are both arguably past their best and Morgan Schneiderlin has struggled to find form since his big-money move from Southampton.
Benfica are on the cusp of the Primeira Liga title and host Vitoria on Friday night.
