FULANI HERDSMEN ON RAMPAGE- KILL FIVE IN ENUGU, DESTROY PROPERTIES

FIVE persons have been killed while several houses were razed down in a fresh clash between the Fulani herdsmen and people of Ukpabi-Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State on Monday.

Reports from the area revealed that the Fulani herdsmen invaded the Enugu border community in early morning of Monday.

The attack came barely two days after security report was said to have revealed that Fulani herdsmen were plotting to invade the community.

Some residents of Ukpabi- Nimbo who fled the area said the number of their people killed have exceeded the five brought to the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka by the police after the herdsmen overpowered the combined team of the military and the mobile policemen who were drafted to restore peace in the area.

According to some of the villagers who are now living as refugees in neighbouring Nsukka, the herdsmen came into Ukpabi-Nimbo with dangerous weapons and started shooting and cutting people in the community with machetes.

"Five of our people are lying dead in Bishop Shanahan Hospital in Nsukka and more bodies will be brought to the hospital. The situation is terrible in our community Nimbo now. As I am talking to you, people are running away for their lives," Nwokedi Okechukwu said in an interview.
When contacted, the Transitional Committee Chairman of Uzo-Uwani, Local Government Area, Cornell Onwubuya said that despite every effort he made to stop the attack the Fulani herdsmen from carrying out their threats, they still went ahead to unleash mayhem on the community.

Meanwhile, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu told reporters that the Commissioner of Police, Nwaodibo Ekechukwu, was already on ground with other security agencies to make sure the situation is brought under control in the area.
