Jack Butland 5/10 Would probably have saved Kroos’ shot had he not been struggling with the injury that forced his departure. One iffy early kick and one brave stop with Mats Hummels in his face.
Nathaniel Clyne 7/10 Got lucky when he played Mario Gómez onside for a goal that was incorrectly chalked off, but oozed competence at both ends and put in a superb delivery for Vardy’s equaliser.
Chris Smalling 7/10 Few alarms at the back beyond a period early in the second half when England became stretched. Germany asked few questions but he looked solid alongside Cahill.
Gary Cahill 7/10 Beaten by Gómez for Germany’s second goal but the captain was fine otherwise. Missed a decent headed chance early on and played one superb diagonal ball to Alli.
Danny Rose 7/10 The debutant did his cause no harm. Diligent defensively, covering his centre-backs well when needed, and visibly grew in confidence going forward. May be hard to displace now.
Dele Alli 9/10 Missed a huge chance to win it before Dier eventually did but that cannot detract from the kind of classy all-round performance we have come to expect. Twice denied by Manuel Neuer; surely a starter in France.
Eric Dier 8/10 Fairytale moment from a player who, quite apart from his late winner, might have played his way into this summer’s team. Underpinned a tigerish midfield performance intelligently.
Jordan Henderson 8/10 Set the tone for an aggressive England press, rarely allowing Germany’s midfielders any rhythm and picked his moments to join the attack. Denied by a Jonas Hector block.
Adam Lallana 7/10 Buzzed with endeavour and looked a threat when coming infield from the right. Missed a presentable first-half chance but joined in slickly and contributed to England’s high tempo.
Harry Kane 8/10 Restricted to decent link-up play with an ambitious supporting cast before his goal but the finish, along with the turn that created it, was wonderful. Tireless work off the ball.
Danny Welbeck 7/10 Usual industrious showing on the left of the attack, epitomised when he chased a lost cause and created Henderson’s chance. Integral to some sharp attacking moves.
SUBSTITUTES Fraser Forster (for Butland 44) 6 Saved smartly from a Marco Reus free-kick but untroubled otherwise; Jamie Vardy (for Welbeck 71) 8 Scored a goal that will go into folklore; Ross Barkley (for Lallana 71) 7 Played a part in Vardy’s goal and contributed well to strong finish.
