There’s one phone call Gina Rodriguez will never forget. The Insider With Yahoo recently caught up with the Jane the Virgin star to talk Verizon’s “Bienvenido a lo Mejor” campaign, and she recalled a particularly special conversation she shared with her father, Genaro Rodriguez, before she made it big.
“I was like, 25 years old. I had just moved to Los Angeles, going after my dream, and I booked a recurring role on Army Wives,”
she said. “I called my parents, and I talked to my dad ’cause he’s my
very best friend, and I tell him that I booked this recurring role on Army Wives
— ‘I’m going to be on three episodes.’ He was so excited — ‘Three
episodes!’ And he goes, ‘Gina, I’m going to be in the front row with you
when you win your Grammy.’ He had no idea that [the] Grammy was music!”
she exclaimed. “And I just was like, ‘Thanks, Dad, thanks!’ But the
beautiful thing about that is that idea that it all just was kind of the
same to him. He was so proud of me.”
During
our chat, Gina also opened up about the one celeb she would like to
have on her speed dial. “Tom Hardy! I’m sorry, did I say that with such
conviction?” she asked with a laugh.
While she hasn’t connected with the Mad Max: Fury Road
star yet, she does want to encourage others to make connections with
people who inspire them. “When Verizon came to me with this campaign
‘Bienvenido a lo Mejor,’ it was to connect social media influencers with
their supporters,” she explained. “And [it] allows them to have that
human-to-human contact, connection.”
As a part of the campaign, consumers can enter for the chance to win an exclusive experience with one of four social media influencers: Colombian chef Juan Manuel Barrientos, soccer player Alejandro Bedoya, beauty vlogger Yasmin Maya, or singer-songwriter Megan Nicole.
