Donald Trump has reached the number of delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination for president, according to an Associated Press count.
The controversial tycoon fought off challenges from 16 other Republican challenges in an ugly primary contest.
He is now likely to face Hillary Clinton who holds a strong lead over her Democratic rival Bernie Sanders.
Donald Trump was about 28 delegates short at the start of the day but a count by the AP has confirmed that he has now secured commitments from the necessary 1,237 delegates needed to become the Republican presidential nominee.
Delegates in Pennsylvania, North Dakota and a few other states were previously coy about over who they would be backing, but after revealing their support for Trump, he can now be declared the Republican presidential nomination.

Many people didn't expect Trump to reach this mark until June 7 at the earliest, which is when the last few states hold their primary contests.
Gaining the backing of 1,237 delegates is a blow to anyone with hope of a contested convention in July in Cleveland.
Confirmation that Trump will be the Republican nominee marks the end of a remarkable journey for the tycoon, who announced his candidacy in June 2015.
