DIDER DESCHAMPS is to sue Eric Cantona after the Manchester United legend suggested the French manager left two players out of his Euro 2016 squad based on race.
In an interview on Thursday, Cantona had claimed that Deschamps may have left out Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa because of their north African ethnicity.
Asked directly if he believed Deschamps was discriminatory against the pair, Cantona replied: “Maybe no, but maybe yes. Why not?”
The two former France team-mates have a long history of animosity stemming back to the mid-1990s when Deschamps replaced Cantona as captain of the national team.
Cantona had described both Ben Arfa and Benzema as “two of the best players in France”. He added that “their origins are north African.
“So the debate is open.”
The head of the French Football Federation, Noel Le Grate, described the claims as “ridiculous” and Deschamps has now hit back through his lawyer.
Carlos Brusa told French newspaper L’Equipe that the former Chelsea midfielder would launch proceedings against Cantona for the “unacceptable, slanderous and defamatory statements that harm Mr Deschamps’ integrity”.
