LIST OF AWARDEES AT THE 22ND ANNUAL SAG AWARDS
Idris Elba received a much deserved accolade at the 22nd Anual Screen & Actors Guild Awards otherwise known as the SAG AWARDS
The SAG Awards typically honor Oscar front-runners — as seen in Spotlight’s Best Cast win — but this year, they made a few choices that were entirely distinct from the Academy’s, giving Idris Elba, who didn’t score an Oscar nomination, two awards, for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor in a Miniseries. (Elba couldn’t have won the second award at the Oscars, but the SAG’s love of his work seemed to read as a statement, a show of support for the sorts of performances the Academy all too easily ignores.) Still, the ceremony wasn’t an entirely revolutionary night. Brie Larson (Best Actress) and Leonardo DiCaprio (Best Actor) continued their march to the end of awards season, while Alicia Vikander (Best Supporting Actress) won a category that could have gone in any direction.
In television, the SAG Awards stuck with more traditional choices, though ones that seemed to underscore the diverse state of TV today, honoring Viola Davis (Best Actress in a Drama), Jeffrey Tambor (Best Actor in a Comedy), Uzo Aduba (Best Actress in a Comedy), Queen Latifah (Best Actress in a Miniseries), and, of course, Idris Elba. Though perhaps the tide also flowed in favor of streaming services, as Netflix took home three awards this evening, including a surprise win for Kevin Spacey (Best Actor in a Drama), who referenced Relativity’s bankruptcy and House of Cards’s showrunner’s exit in his speech.
