JOSE MOURINHO will succeed Louis van Gaal as boss of Manchester United at the end of this season, according to reports in Italy.
The Portuguese coach, sacked by Chelsea after a disappointing start to this season, is said to be very close to sealing the deal he craves.
Mourinho is allegedly preparing to put pen to paper with the 20-time Premier League champions having been given a brief to restore the Old Trafford glory days.
United have not won the title since 2013, while they face a struggle to make next season’s Champions League.
They must beat Bournemouth on Sunday and hope neighbours City lose atSwansea if they are to take a place at the top table of European football.
This season has been a difficult one with Van Gaal’s style of play being constantly critcised. However, United do have an FA Cup final against Crystal Palace to come.
However, Sky Italia insist this will still not be enough for Van Gaal to keep his job. They report that while the deal with Mourinho is not yet official, it is only a matter of hours away.
Mourinho himself is coy on the subject. “In July, I will be back,” he said. “So we are in May. May to July is nothing. I keep enjoying my life which I’m doing, keep enjoying my family. But in July I am back.”
Louis van Gaal has one year to run on his contract and the Dutchman has already been involved in planning for next season, a luxury Mourinho will be denied wherever he ends up.
