A 56-year-old man who was arrested three times in the 1980s for driving under the influence was questioned when the crane he was operating crashed more than 200 feet to the ground in Manhattan this morning, killing one Harvard graduate and injuring three others
The crane operator, identified as Kevin Reilly by the NYDailyNews, has maintained a clean record since and blew a .000 on a Breathalyzer test. He is cooperating with officials as the investigation continues.
The crane, at 57 Worth Street near Church Street and West Broadway in Tribeca, was being lowered during heavy snow fall and strong winds when it plummeted at 8:24am, clipping two buildings as it fell on a line of parked cars.
A 38-year-old married Harvard graduate, identified as David Wichs, was killed on the scene.
Wichs was born in Prague and immigrated to the US as a teenager, graduating from Harvard University with a degree in mathematics. He went on to work at the computerized financial trading firm, Tower Research Capital, and lived in New York's Upper West Side.
