NIGERIAN COPYRIGHT COMMISSION DESCENDS ON MOVIE PIRATES, CONFISCATE OVER N2M PIRATED MOVIES

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in collaboration with the police in Lagos arrested five suspects for alleged piracy of copies of a movie valued at N2million.
The NCC Lagos Zonal Manager, Mr Obi Ezeilo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday that the suspects were arrested at the Computer Village, Ikeja.
He said that the arrest was made following complaints by The ELFIKE Film/Koga Studios that produced a movie entitled, `The Wedding Party’ that it was being pirated.
According to him, the complainant who produced the movie reported to the police that it suspected that “The Wedding Party’’ it had not released to the market was being pirated.
“The ELFIKE Film/Koga Studios reported the development to the Area ‘F’ Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
“The police investigation led to the arrest of five suspected pirates with some pirated copies of the movie worth several millions of naira in their possessions.

“The suspects have sold millions of copies of the pirated movie valued at N2 million,’’ he said.
He added that the suspected pirates were arrested at the Computer village while hawking pirated copies of the movie on the streets.
The zonal manager said that investigation was still ongoing adding that the commission would prosecute the culprits in due course.
“The sale is illicit, illegal and an infringement on copyright law,” he said.
Ezeilo said that the offence was contrary to Section 20 of the Nigeria Copyright Act. (NAN)

2017 IS "CERTIFIED " AND "PADDING FREE"- DG BUDGET OFFICE

I guess its time to bring out your binoculars to peruse the 2017 budget to confirm the latest claims by the DG of the Budget Office if the claims coming from that office are anything to go by.

The Director-General, DG, Budget Office of the Federation, Mr. Ben Akabueze, has clarified that the budget presented to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari was exactly what the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, MDAs certified.

He insisted there was no padding in the 2017 Budget as being alleged in some quarters.
Akabueze made this known on Thursday at a news conference in Abuja.
The DG said, “Padding is a term used to describe unauthorized or undisclosed insertions into the budget and I can say without equivocation that there is no padding in the 2017 budget proposal.
“The process of preparing the 2017 budget required MDAs to upload their budgets online by their accredited officers, who were issued access codes to ensure an audit trail of all entries.

“The Chief Executive/Chief Accounting Officers of all MDAs were required to certify their final budget inputs.
“The budget presented to the National Assembly by Mr. President was exactly what the MDAs certified,” he said.
The director-general assured that the Budget Office was committed to ensuring Nigerians are fully involved in the budget process, adding that the National Assembly was also committed to passing the budget in March.
While clarifying issues raised concerning the budget, the DG said, “The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) is updating its price list, following a valid concern about difference in prices for the same items.
“The price list when updated would be structured into the budget preparation application to make it impossible for various agencies to use the different prices for the same items in the budget.
“Various commentaries had termed some expenditure as frivolous, suspicious or wasteful, but that no item should be regarded as such because for welfare packages set aside to cater for support for funerals of deceased staff and so on, it was impossible to accurately project them and so MDAs used their best judgement.

“The 2017 budget was prepared, using the Zero-Based Budget, ZBB, system which required that every project/programme must be justified each year for inclusion in the budget.
“This does not imply that projects captured in the previous year’s budget will not feature in the current proposal, especially if the project was not implemented due to funding challenges or is still an ongoing project.
“Someone simply aggregated the budgets of the Budget Office, the Ministry of Budget and National Planning and the provisions made by receptive MDAs for budget preparation and administration.

“They described the total of N5.41 billion as cost of preparing the budget; this is not correct and reflects a lack of appreciation of the full scope of responsibilities of the budget office and its parent Ministry of Budget and National Planning.
“The budget summarized key ingredients of the Nigeria Economic Recovery and growth Plan, NERGP 2017-2019 which built on the strategic implementation plan of the 2016 budget.”

PROTESTERS STORM MTN OFFICE IN ABUJA TO PROTEST XENOPHOBIC ATTACKS

MTN Nigeria office in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, was invaded on Thursday afternoon by a group of angry Nigerians protesting the continued Xenophobic attacks on their fellow citizens and other Africans in South Africa.
A senior manager in the MTN Abuja Office located in the Maitama district told News Express: “We had to hurriedly lock up and go home. I don’t see them as protesters but as people who came to steal and cause confusion.

“It is a case of invasion. They came, opened the gate, entered and harassed people. They stole customers’ phones; they stole the phones and laptops of staff. There were up to 30 policemen but they didn’t do anything to stop them.”

The source condemned the invasion, noting that the protesters could have made their point in a more civilised way.
He said: “Nobody is happy over what is happening in South Africa. I understand that people have the right to be angry over what is happening there but this is not the best way to go about it.
“They could have come here and say, ‘Shut down this place; you can no longer operate’ but not to attack Nigerians who work here and those who came here to repair their phones is unfortunate”.

NAIRA REBOUNDS AGAINST THE DOLLAR, NOW N470 TO A DOLLAR AT THE PARALLEL MARKET

The Naira on Thursday gained against United States dollar at the parallel market.
The dollar which started the day at N500 early morning fell to about N470 by the afternoon.
The development saw many Nigerians rushing to the market to sell their foreign currency.

The market has witnessed strengthening of the Naira since early in the week.
The is as the apex bank changed its policies in the supply of the foreign exchange.
On Tuesday about $500 million was released through the interbank market where the 23 banks bought $371m in the market

PHIL JONES' CLEANERS DRAG HIM TO COURT FOR UNLAWFUL TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT

Cleaners to Manchester United defender, Phil Jones’ cleaners, Angela and Nigel Stubbs are said to be taking him to an employment tribunal after he dismissed them from their jobs with six hours’ notice before Christmas.
Manchester United defender, Jones reportedly sacked the married pair of cleaners over £300 petrol bill they incurred while helping to move his things to a new apartment.
Stubbs said the bill came about when they helped the footballer to move his belongings with fiancée Kaya Hall into a new £5 million home.

They explained further that they had six trips a day between Jones’ old home in Bowdon, Cheshire, to the new place in Alderley Edge.
But the player has reportedly denied the claims – saying the cleaners breached their contracts by asking for wages in advance.
According to The Sun UK, Jones who earns £80,000-a-week, sacked them before Christmas.
An £18,000 Skoda provided for their work was also taken back, they claimed.
Nigel told the newspaper, “Phil has behaved like a skinflint towards us.

“For someone worth several millions of pounds, I can’t believe he’s kicked off over just £300.
“This is all because they took issue when we asked for help with a petrol bill, which we only spent because we were helping them move house.”

The couple believes they should have received £8,000 because they were not given three months’ notice and only given one month’s money instead.
But Jones’ lawyers said the couple had repeatedly asked for salary in advance and ignored warnings about the issue.
According to the player’s legal team, “The continued breach of that requirement and your failure to cease making such requests despite being warned is also a ground for summary termination.”

SLUSH FUNDS- PATIENCE JONATHAN DRAGS EFCC TO COURT

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has fixed April 24th to hear a fundamental rights suit filed by former First Lady, Patience Jonathan against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Presiding Judge, Justice Salihu Saidu fixed the date after the EFCC filed a notice of preliminary objection.
Lawyer to the EFCC, Kayode Oni in the notice is challenging the jurisdiction of the court.
But counsel to Patience Jonathan, Granville Abibo who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria faulted the notice of the EFCC telling the court that late response of the anti-graft agency is a tactic to delay the matter.

Speaking with newsmen outside the court room, Abibo SAN said they are in court to stop the EFCC from intimidating the wife of the former President.
According to him, “You are aware that Mrs. Jonathan has always tried to be law abiding despite being harassed and intimidated by the media trials.
“The court being the last hope of the Command man that is why we have come to court. But you know in court the other party has the right to reply but the matter has just be adjourned because of EFCC because they just brought a notice to court today which we need to respond.
“For us we have put the facts on the table truthfully. The EFCC took the first shot by freezing her accounts but they have refused to stop there. They have also gone ahead to take other unecessary actions which we feel is violating her rights.”
Meanwhile, a group of protesters have stormed the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt in solidarity of the former First Lady.

The protesters including market women, men and youths chanted anti government songs against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Some of those who spoke with DAILY POST accused the Federal Government of using its agencies to embarrass Patience Jonathan.
One Wilcox said, “We are not happy that we are in court because of a case concerning our own mother. The mother of peace.
“As Ijaw people were are not happy that our own sister after serving this country has continued to be humiliated by this government. For the past two years since this government took over they have not allowed Jonathan and his wife to rest. They have been going after anybody that is close to Jonathan.

“This our mother of peace who made sure there is no bloodshed in this country is being treated anyhow. The peace that ECOWAS paid millions of dollars to get in Gambia was given to this country for free but they won’t appreciate it.
“We are here to let the Federal government know that we will not standby and watch them treat our mother anyhow.”
Recall that a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos had granted an order to the EFCC to freeze the account of Patience Jonathan who is being investigated for money laundering and other financial crimes.A

DRIVER SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS IN PRISON FOR RAPING 80 YEAR OLD WOMAN

An Ado Ekiti High Court has sentenced a 45-year-old commercial driver, Lawrence Adedapo, to seven years imprisonment for raping an 80-year-old women, Madam Grace Asaolu.
Justice Dele Omotoso convicted Adedapo based on evidence before the court which showed that the driver forcefully had carnal knowledge of the old woman and was guilty as charged.
The convict sexually assaulted the octogenarian on 7th November, 2013 at Oke Erimope Street, Ogbese, Ise-Ekiti and was subsequently charged to court.
In the course of the trial, Adedapo pleaded not guilty to the charge and gave evidence in his own defence but called no witness.
In his testimony, Adedapo who described the old woman as his “mother as well as his concubine” whom he has been dating as far back as his bachelor years claimed that Mrs. Asaolu framed him up.

He claimed that the old woman had earlier approached him for a sum of money to travel to her village but on that date, she walked into his room and demanded for the money.
The driver claimed that the old woman started romancing him which eventually led to a sexual intercourse after he had given her N1,000.

The prosecution led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi, gave evidence that the convict confessed to have been dating the woman before the incident and that she consented to the sexual intercourse.
Ajayi tendered the blood-stained clothes of the victim which was recovered from the scene of the incident.
The trial judge resolved all issues for determination against Adedapo and consequently sentenced him to a jail term of seven years for unlawfully having carnal knowledge of the old woman.

ABDULMUMIN JIBRIN MAKES FRESH ALLEGATIONS AGAINST BUHARI'S KITCHEN CABINET

Suspended member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, who has revealed that some people have started questioning the authority of the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo.
Jibrin, took to his Twitter account, @AbdulAbmj, to air his views, saying that there may be cracks in the government if “some people” start questioning Osinbajo’s orders as Acting President.
In a series of tweets on Monday, Jibrin said some people run to see President Muhammadu Buhari in London, where he is on vacation, to ask if he agrees with instructions given by the Acting President.
Jibrin advised Buhari to trust the decisions of his vice, “because it would make him more effective.”
He wrote, “I know that VP Osinbajo will come under subterranean attacks and his crime is he has no corruption allegations on him like others. VP Osinbajo has carried on with grace and dignity building a momentum that the country can cash in and accelerate to regain lost mileage.
“We must repel primordial interests promoted by some selfish people who are planting stories of fear & instability where there should be non. So you hear stories of what if the president dies? Is dead meant for only PMB? Who will not die? Who? Osinbajo? Saraki? Dogara or Jibrin?
“Constitution is explicitly clear on succession. If a president dies, VP takes over. If VP dies, President nominates. If Senate president. Or Speaker dies, senators and members elect new ones. If a member dies, by election is conducted. So why the panic? Evil ones are at work.

“We should pray for quick recovery of PMB but shift our attention to governance of our country, hold on our institutions and constitution. I do not believe that there is anybody in this govt that wants success for it more than the VP…PMB must beware of divisive elements.

“When Osinbajo gives instruction and you have people running to London to ask PMB if that is what he wants, you may start having cracks. My advice to PMB is to rely strongly on his VP & refer all issues and persons to him until he resumes. This will make the VP more effective.

“In this era when our first 11 except PMB are facing several corruption allegations, VP Osinbajo brings some fresh air and credibility. We should support the VP to hold our country together and continue the good work he has started while praying for safe return of PMB.
“I will make comments in due course on the VP’s residence project ,Senate P and Speaker’s residence projects and the 2016 and 2017 budgets.”

ZIMBABWEAN MAN BEATS UP LOVE RIVAL'S CORPSE FOR HAVING AFFAIR WITH HIS WIFE

A Zimbabwean man identified as Tineyi Moyo, weekend caused a stir as he reportedly beat up the corpse of a man, Learnmore Dube, whom he claimed had an affair with his wife, Selina Nyoka, before his death.
Dube’s funeral was ongoing on Saturday evening when angry Moyo stormed the deceased’s home and then proceeded to beat his corpse up for sleeping with his wife.
Zim News is reporting that Nyoka was devastated at the news of Dube’s death.
Moyo reportedly noticed his wife’s anguish and after questioning her, discovered that she had been having a secret affair with the deceased.

Speaking on the bizarre incident, Chief Chireya of the Magamba village, said Moyo decided to get his ‘revenge’ even in death.
“He came to the funeral wake and started insulting everyone who was there and demanded to see Dube’s corpse.
“He said his wife had confessed to having an illicit affair with Dube,” the Chief said.
The Chief noted that he summoned Moyo to his presence to defend his actions.

Chief Chireya quoted Moyo as saying, “I was angry after discovering that he was sleeping with my wife.
“What made me angrier is that the truth came out when he was dead, meaning I couldn’t confront him.
“Therefore, I decided to beat him and honestly I felt better after beating him,” the Chief said, adding that Moyo had been released but was levied three cows which he must handover to the deceased’s family as fine for disrespecting them

OYO STATE WORKERS THREATEN TO SHUT DOWN THE STATE OVER UNPAID SALARIES

Some workers in the employment of Oyo State have said they can no longer guarantee the industrial peace with the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters with the way it treats workers and pensioners under it.
The workers under the umbrella of various unions including Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) while addressing a press conference in Ibadan on Monday expressed concern over what they termed the poor condition of their members in the state.

The unions in a statement jointly signed by NULGE President Com. Titilola Bayo Sodo; NUT Chairman Com. Akano Samuel Oluniyi as well as NUP Chairman Pa. Gbadegesin Akande, accused the supervisory ministry of witholding the allocations for a minimum of two to three months before releasing them to pay workers’ salaries and pensions.
“While the Oyo State Government disburses its monthly allocations promptly to pay workers and pensioners, the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters hiding under a punitive and self-serving of Joint Account Allocation Committee, JAAC to hold allocations for upwards of two to three months before releasing them to pay workers’ salaries and pensions.

“While the allocations are kept in the banks for unknown reasons, workers and pensioners wallow in undeserved poverty.”
“Right now, while Oyo State Government had paid its workers and pensioners two months salaries and pensions from Paris Club fund and a month allocation, Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters is yet to release fund to pay local government workers and pensioners, serving Primary School Teachers and retired Primary School Teachers.”
The workers further accused the Ministry of claiming that the addition of State Internally Generated Revenue, IGR which was not forthcoming from the State Government was stalling the payment of the arrears, while noting that if N2 billion needed to be released to pay the arrears and N1.8billion is available, the Ministry should go ahead to use the available fund to pay the arrears until the remaining N200million is accessed.

“From now on, we demand that payment of salaries and pensions of Local government workers/pensioners, serving primary school teachers and retired primary school teachers be made on the first line charge and in full.
“That the subsisting memorandum of understanding entered into by the joint labour centres with the state government in June, 2015 that 100 percent of allocations be dedicated to the payment of salaries and pensions be implemented henceforth by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.

“That, henceforth, allocations should not be held again in banks for upward of two to three months before salaries and pensions are paid. Workers and pensioners should be paid immediately federal allocation is paid.
“That every month, all workers and pensioners who draw their salaries/pensions from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters be paid regularly and promptly.”A

PDP CRISES- GOVERNOR WIKE RULES OUT RECONCILLIATION

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has said that lack of sincerity on the part of some members of the Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has ruled out reconciliation as a solution to the crisis rocking the party.
He gave this explanation during a chat with the media over the recent Appeal Court judgement that affirmed Sheriff as the authentic national chairman of the party
Wike said that several reconciliation committees had been set-up in the past to wade into the crisis and bring a political solution but that the Sheriff-led faction had severally sabotaged the efforts of the committees.

He alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was working behind the scene to keep the PDP in disarray as its survival strategy.
The governor, who ruled out dumping the party because of Sheriff, said he believed that the Appeal Court pronouncement in favour of the embattled national chairman of the party will not stand.
He further said that the only way a solution to the crisis rocking the party can be achieved was through a ruling of the Supreme Court.

Wike said: “Nobody can say he does not want reconciliation. How many times has PDP set up a committee on reconciliation?
“You realized that when we lost election in Ondo state, there was a statement made by Sheriff and company. And if we had lost election in Rivers state, they would have come up with a statement. They would have said: ‘How will we win when people like Wike don’t want people to participate.’
“Is that the one you want to be national chairman of a party?
“But because we won, they could not come up with any statement. That is the kind of thing I am talking about. In all honesty, I cannot see myself making commitment to work with that kind of leadership.

“Leaving the PDP is not an option yet ; I have hopes that there is no way the Appeal Court judgement that affirmed Ali Modu Sheriff as PDP national chairman can stand. I believe we have a good case against Sheriff.
“The APC knows that the only way it can survive is to make sure PDP does not come up. The real PDP members are working very hard to make sure the party is put together. That is why I am telling you of the moles.
“There are certain characters I cannot see myself sitting down with them and talking politics. I don’t have the confidence that Ali Modu Sheriff can lead this party.”

CBN DIRECTS BANKS TO RELEASE FOREX AT N375 TO A DOLLAR FOR SCHOOL FEES, MEDICALS

The Central Bank of Nigeria has said, as part of its efforts to alleviate the sufferings experienced by Nigerians, who source forex for school fees, medicals and personal traveling allowance (PTA), it has decided to fund banks directly with additional forex to satisfy their obligations .
Acting Director, Corporate Communications, CBN, Isaac Okoroafor, who dropped this hint when he was featured as a guest on Arise News Network, a sister company of THISDAY, also gave the assurance that with the gradual improvement in local production and the economy in general, the value of the naira measured against the United States dollar would strengthen.
Preparatory to providing the additional forex, the CBN had, last Thursday, pegged the exchange rate for payment of the school fees, and personal travel allowance (PTA) and medicals at N375 to the dollar. This new rate as quoted by a source will take effect from Monday.
According to Okoroafor, “The Central Bank of Nigeria has taken a decision to directly fund banks with additional foreign exchange to be able to take care of some personal travel allowance, school fees and medical payments. With that, we have tried to set an exchange rate for those transactions at 20 per cent above the interbank rate – that is, 20 per cent above the interbank rate that ranges between N305 and N315.”
The CBN spokesman advised Nigerians, who have legitimate reasons to procure forex to approach their banks, where their needs would be cater for rather than go to the parallel market. “The banks have been directed to sell to all the people that will come up for it and they actually have been directed to open up avenues at the airport so that they can deal with these demands,” he said

MEET THE WOMAN (PICTURED) WHO SUFFERS FROM RARE HEALTH CONDITION THAT MAKES HER FAINT DURING SEX

A mother-of-three suffers from a rare condition that causes her to faint during sex.
Laura Crow, 28, was diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTs) in 2011, after it was triggered by her first pregnancy.
As a result of the disorder, her resting heart rate is 110 beats per minute - around 40 beats higher than the average person.
But triggers including adrenaline and excitement can cause it to peak at 180 beats per minute - which can cause her to pass out.
It's led to some tricky situations - and she has even passed out while beneath the sheets with her husband Ben, 28.

Laura Crow, 28, has been living with a bizarre medical condition that causes sudden collapses - and they can even happen during intercourse

Mrs Crow, from Southend, said: 'Whenever I have sex, there's a 50/50 chance I'll faint.
'The fainting can happen anywhere, any time - but with PoTs it's usually a case of gravity taking over, so the best way for us to do it is missionary, with me lying down.
'The first time it happened it was a massive shock for both of us. Ben gets very upset - when I wake up he is very distressed, even though he never continues after I've passed out.
'Once I faint I don't know what's going on, but it's very traumatic and worrying for him. But luckily it doesn't affect our relationship. He's the strongest rock I could ever ask for.'
'I'm not going to stop laughing or having sex in the name of PoTs.'
But it's not just sex that makes her pass out - other triggers include not getting enough sleep, temperature, laughing, exercise and anything that causes her heart rate to increase, like watching a horror movie.

DANI ALVES BRANDS FORMER SIDE, BARCELONA FOR BEING "DISRESPECTFUL"

Dani Alves has slammed his former side Barcelona for their 'false and ungrateful' attitude towards him, claiming it was the reason why he ultimately decided to depart for Juventus.
The Brazilian was able to bring an eight-year spell at the Nou Camp to an end last summer after activating a peculiar termination clause in his contract.
Months of speculation meant it came as little surprise to the press but, considering their troubles at right-back this season, Barcelona were evidently not prepared.

Brazilian right-back Dani Alves won 13 major titles during an eight-year spell with Barcelona

Alves, 33, says the La Liga champions only have themselves to blame with regards to his exit, claiming the hierarchy have 'no idea' how to treat their players properly.

The defender told ABC: 'During my last three seasons I always heard that "Alves was leaving", but the managers never said anything to me. They were very false and ungrateful. They did not respect me.

'I was only offered to renew when the FIFA transfer ban came in. That was when I went and signed a deal with a termination clause.
'Those who run Barcelona today have no idea how to treat their players.'

RADAMEL FALCAO BACK IN MANCHESTER FOR CRUNCH EUROPEAN TIE WITH MAN CITY

Radamel Falcao flew in to Manchester today with his Monaco team mates as they bid to oust United's cross city rivals from Europe's elite competition.

Although he may not have many happy memories of Manchester but Radamel Falcao had a smile on his face as he returned to the city on Monday. The striker readily signed a united shirt when mobbed by fans at the city centre.

The Colombian striker struggled during his one season as a Manchester United player, with just four goals in 29 games during a loan spell.

But now, as he returns to face Manchester City with Monaco, he looked to be relaxed and ready to prove himself again.
The Colombian striker has been in blistering form for the french side all season as he appears to have overcome his injury hoodoo that has plagued his career for a couple of seasons now.

El Tigre as he is fondly called would be hoping to pile the misery on former Barca coach, Pep Guardiola when the sides face off tomorrow.
