Veteran Nollywood actor, Segun Arinze, has described new actors in
the industry as social media ‘celebrities’ who are not well grounded in
the art.
Arinze, in an interview with HipTv lamented the worrisome state of
the industry especially the idea of new Nollywood replacing old
Nollywood.
He stressed that the new structure does not portray actors as
professionals as they tend to be more concerned about popularity on
social media than being constantly trained.
The actor said, “Today’s set of Nollywood actors are not grounded. What they know how to do is to speak phonetics.
“Most of these guys are pretentious. They are only interested in who
has the highest number of likes or followers on their social media
platforms.
“Most of them are not even disciplined and they lack the knowledge;
they only want to be popular,” the actor further stated, noting that
talent was not enough as an actor but constant training to surpass your
colleagues.
“I am sorry to say this but the truth is that today’s crop of
Nollywood actors are not grounded. Talent is not the only thing you
need; you also have to be grounded,” he added.
