After rising to prominence in such gritty dramas as The Wire and going on to star as the titular character in acclaimed series Luther, Idris Elba has become beloved as a screen tough guy.
But the 43-year-old actor - whose name has been constantly thrown into the ring as a contender to become the next James Bond - has shown that in real life he's a big softy when it comes to family.
The dashing east London native was spotted enjoying a fun-filled day out in sunny New York City with his adorable two-year-old son Winston and a female companion on Wednesday.

Looking casually cool in a white T-shirt with blue jeans and red espadrilles, the screen star appeared to be in his element as he lovingly held his youngest offspring's hand while strolling in the Big Apple.
Toting a Louis Vuitton bag, the actor, musician and DJ looked sported a stylish gold watch and held tightly onto his iPhone as he showed his offspring the sights and sounds of the bustling metropolis.
And while Idris undoubtedly lived up to his cool image in the sartorial stakes, he may just well have been beaten to the punch by his son, who stepped out with his famous dad in impeccable style.
Big ride: The hunky actor ended up carrying his son on his shoulders, as the adorable tot got tired of walking
Little Winston grinned as he meandered through Manhattan's streets in a blue patterned shirt with a pink bow tie, cuffed cream trousers and a pair of light grey espadrilles.
As the long walk started to become too much for the toddler, he happily rode on his dad's shoulders for the rest of the way as the trio pressed on with their plans for the day.
Idris welcomed his son with girlfriend Naiyana Garth, with whom he was reported to split earlier this year, although they later attended London's BAFTA TV Awards together in May.
The star is also dad to 14-year-old daughter Isan, from his marriage to Hanne 'Kim' Norgaard. The couple's divorce was officially granted in 2003.
While the actor has laughed off the suggestions, his name has been regularly mentioned in the list of stars who should take over from Daniel Craig as 007, including that of Tom Hiddleston.
And American actress Zoe Saldana recently added her support, telling Glamour magazine: 'I think Idris should have been Bond a long time ago…why wouldn’t [he] be Bond?
'I love him and adore him and honestly believe that he is one of the sexiest men alive - and my husband won’t mind me saying that because, trust me, he agrees with me.'
