Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho could renew rivalry in pre-season as United and City line up Manchester derby in China

The phoney derby, which could take place in Beijing or Shanghai on July 29 or 30, will be one of Guardiola’s first games in charge of City after he arrives from Bayern Munich in the summer.

Although Guardiola is uncomfortable with the idea of facing clubs from the same country out of competition, City are being paid several millions to play in the International Champions Cup.

Negotiations with United, who are expected to be in China for 10 days, but who must fly back from the Far East in good time for Wayne Rooney’s testimonial against Everton at Old Trafford on August 3, are close to being finalised.

Intriguingly, United manager Louis van Gaal has played a full part in the pre-season tour plans, even though it is widely expected that he will be replaced by Jose Mourinho this summer.
