Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton claimed key victories on 'mini Super Tuesday' and inched ever closer to winning their parties nomination to battle it out for the White House.
Trump suffered a disappointing result in Ohio where he lost out to John Kasich, but he won the other states up for grabs - Missouri, Illinois and North Carolina, and crucially also defeated Marco Rubio in his home state of Florida.
The loss in Florida prompted Rubio to withdraw from the race, which only leaves Ted Cruz and Kasich to challenge Trump's seemingly unstoppable march towards the Republican nomination.
Kasich won his first state in the race as he claimed all of the 66 delegates on offer in Ohio, where he is governor. His victory was not unexpected but it could ensure that the Republican's choice to run for President may now come down to the party's convention in July.
However, Trump only needs just over half of the hundreds of delegates remaining to win a majority in the race.
In the Democratic contest, Mrs Clinton enjoyed a hugely successful night over rival Bernie Sanders.
She won all of the five participating states - Florida, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois and North Carolina - and now has nearly double the amount of delegates secured by Sanders.
The election in Missouri was extremely close and Mrs Clinton only claimed victory by just over 1,500 votes, but in the other States her wins were more emphatic.
It now seems virtually impossible for Sanders to overcome her lead.
