Bayer Leverkusen rallied from three goals down to draw 3-3 at Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Ja-Cheol Koo scored a hat trick for the Bavarians, but they threw
away the points as Karim Bellarabi and then a Paul Verhaegh own goal
reduced the arrears.
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw gave away a penalty in stoppage time, earning a
red card, before Hakan Calhanoglu converted to salvage a draw for
Leverkusen.
Schalke climbed to fourth thanks to a dramatic 3-1 win over Cologne which could so easily have ended in defeat for the Royal Blues.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar gave Schalke the lead with a penalty awarded
inside the first minute of the game and Max Meyer doubled their
advantage midway through the first half before Leonardo Bittencourt
grabbed a long overdue goal for the hosts.
Chances were wasted at both ends before Franco Di Santo scored his
second goal of the season only minutes after coming on as a substitute,
meeting Dennis Aogo's cross at the near post to give Schalke a two-goal
cushion.
Wolfsburg closed to within two points of fifth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach thanks to a 2-1 win over the Foals at the VW-Arena.
Julian Draxler and Max Kruse put Dieter Hecking's men in command early on, but a spectacular Raffael effort reduced the arrears.
Both sides created chances in an entertaining encounter, but the
Wolves held on to get back into the race for a place in Europe next
season.
Claudio Pizarro scored his 100th Bundesliga goal for Werder Bremen in a 4-1 win over last-place Hannover.
Fin Bartels put the hosts in front after 18 minutes before the
in-form Pizarro scored his 10th Bundesliga goal in 2016 to make it two
soon after.
Kenan Karaman brought the Reds back into the game on the stroke of
half-time, but Theodor Gebre-Selassie restored Bremen's two-goal lead 10
minutes into the second half with a shot which arrowed across
Ron-Robert Zieler and into the far left-hand corner of his goal after
good work from Pizarro.
Zlatko Junuzovic made it 4-1 with a volley from just outside the
penalty area from Gebre-Selassie's pass, allowing Bremen to pull away
from the bottom three and leave Hannover, who have now lost 10 of their
last 11, rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga, eight points from
safety.
Stuttgart bounced back emphatically from two straight defeats to thrash local rivals Hoffenheim 5-1 and move 10 points clear of the relegation zone.
Georg Niedermeier put Stuttgart in front in the sixth minute before Lukas Rupp added a second just before half-time.
Niedermeier powerfully headed home the third to put the result beyond
doubt early in the second half. Andrej Kramaric pulled one back for
Hoffenheim, but Filip Kostic restored Stuttgart's three-goal lead just
five minutes later and Timo Werner completed the scoring.
Eintracht Frankfurt missed an opportunity to move out of the bottom three as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by 10-man Ingolstadt.
Moritz Hartmann put the visitors in front in the eighth minute and
both he and Stefan Lex wasted chances to make it two before the
interval.
Marco Russ brought Frankfurt level midway through the second half
when he flicked Marco Fabian's cross inside the far post with his head,
just beating Ramazan Ozcan to the ball six yards out.
Pascal Gross was sent off in the 74th minute for a second yellow
card, but Frankfurt were unable to take advantage of the extra man.
